Why Visit Montenegro in 2026?
Montenegro is a small, stunning country in Southeast Europe, located on the Adriatic Coast between Croatia and Albania, offering dramatic mountains, historic towns, and breathtaking coastlines for travellers seeking luxury travel experiences. Below are just some of the top reasons to visit the different regions of Montenegro.
Bay of Kotor
Montenegro offers a wealth of experiences for luxury travellers. Explore the historic UNESCO-listed old town of Kotor and the charming village of Perast, with its iconic islets of Our Lady of the Rocks and St George Island. Take private boat tours to discover the bay’s hidden beauty, including the dazzling Blue Cave. For adventure and panoramic views, ride the Kotor cable car and alpine coaster. Experience the elegance of Montenegro’s modern resort towns, including Portonovi, Porto Montenegro, and Luštica Bay, where contemporary luxury meets Adriatic charm.
These highlights make Montenegro a top destination for luxury travel and exclusive experiences that you’ll remember for years to come!
Northern Mountains & National Parks
While the Bay of Kotor undoubtedly steals the spotlight, Montenegro’s mountains offer a different kind of luxury escape. Tranquil and unspoiled, the highlands allow you to reconnect with nature, enjoy peaceful hikes, and breathe in crisp alpine air. For travellers seeking serenity and outdoor adventure, exploring Montenegro’s mountains is an essential part of any luxury travel experience.
Durmitor National Park boasts towering peaks and rugged landscapes, while Biogradska Gora National Park is perfect if you want to escape to sprawling forests and tranquil lakes. The Tara River Canyon connects the two, and is an absolute must for adventurous activities like kayaking, water rafting and ziplining.
Montenegro's Adriatic Coast
If you’re looking for something a bit livelier, head to Budva and the Adriatic coastline. As the main beach town in Montenegro, Budva has a range of bars and nightclubs for nights out plus beautiful beaches to unwind during the day.
Gaze out at the iconic island of Sveti Stefan, relax on the soft sands of Jaz Beach, or discover the secluded coves dotted along the Luštica Peninsula. Private yacht trips allow you to uncover hidden beaches inaccessible by land, while kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing offer active ways to experience the Adriatic.
Cultural highlights, such as the historic towns of Budva and Herceg Novi, sit just moments from the water, making beach days a mix of relaxation and discovery. For those planning a luxury holiday in Montenegro, the coastline combines natural beauty, adventure, and unforgettable experiences.
How to Travel Solo in Montenegro
Montenegro is a great place to visit for solo travellers too. Here’s our travel advice as a specialist travel agency for this beautiful destination.
Where to Stay
Choosing the right place to stay will help provide a great base for your stay in Montenegro. For first-time visitors, the Bay of Kotor offers a relaxed atmosphere and walkable towns, so you can explore at your own pace. Montenegro has beautiful boutique hotels and guesthouses so you can enjoy comfort, privacy, and attentive service.
For a quieter experience, Perast and Luštica Bay are great options. Perast is just a short drive from Kotor town and is known for its baroque architecture, whilst Luštica Bay is a modern, purpose-built marina community designed for luxury travellers.
If you’re looking for a livelier feel, we would recommend staying in Budva, which offers sandy beaches, a buzzing promenade, and the historic Old Town. Budva is a great base if you’re looking for a mix of beach life, nightlife, and culture.
Alternatively, if you’re looking seeking nature connection in Montenegro, the mountainous regions around Durmitor and Biogradska Gora are a great choice. You’ll find eco-lodges and alpine retreats where you can spend the day hiking or mountain biking and relax in the evenings.
Wherever you choose, Montenegro is guaranteed to provide warm hospitality which feels like home.
Getting Around
As a solo traveller, guided tours are a great way to interact and meet small groups of people and get your bearings. We’d recommend guided tours in Kotor’s Old Town, Durmitor, or Stari Bar to maximise your experiences in these amazing places. Many of these tours include transport too, so you can sit back and enjoy the scenery!
If you have the time, it’s worth venturing north for a few days to breathe the fresh mountain air and connect with nature. If you prefer independence, you can rent a car from the airport, whether you’re flying into Tivat (if you’re sticking to the coast) or Podgorica (if you’re exploring the mountainous national parks). The roads in Montenegro are well-signposted and easy to navigate. Alternatively, you can arrange a private transfer through your hotel or a taxi service.
Travel Safety
Montenegro is generally very safe, and with the normal travel precautions you shouldn’t encounter any issues. That being said, as always with travel, please take sensible precautions to ensure your trip is as smooth as possible:
Use licensed taxis or arranged transfers, either by your hotel or travel agency, for the most reliable and cost-effective transport.
Stay aware in busy tourist areas and keep belongings safe.
If you are hiring a car, take care on the mountain roads. Drive slowly and take breaks. Check the weather and bring suitable clothing before hiking or exploring national parks.
When swimming, stay in designated areas and be cautious of rocky coastlines.
You may like to carry a small amount of cash to enjoy small cafes and rural shops which may not accept card.
Respect local customs and treat protected areas, historic villages and mountain trails with care. Stick to marked paths, avoid loud behaviour in quiet natural areas and leave no trace.
Local Culture
If you need advice, locals are always happy to help and will have some fantastic recommendations, so don’t be afraid to ask! A simple ‘Dobar dan’ (good day) is always appreciated.
It’s normal for food service to feel relaxed as the Montenegrins tend to be unrushed at meals. Leaving a tip is always appreciated, with around 10% being typical for for good service.
If you’re a coffee lover, Montenegro is a fantastic place for you. Coffee is a social ritual here and locals will enjoy long chats over espresso or Turkish coffee. So if you’re invited for a coffee, it’s a great sign!
Expert Advice You Can Trust: An Inside Look at Montenegro
Below are the personal reflections on Montenegro’s charm as seen first-hand by Ben Langsdale, Director of Travel Without Limits.
“What strikes me every time I visit Montenegro is just how dramatic the landscapes feel. No photograph prepares you for the scale of the mountains, the stillness of the bay, or the sense of belonging. This is exactly why Montenegro is gaining attention in the luxury travel space.
Each time I return, I wish I could bottle the feeling. The calm, unhurried atmosphere is unlike anywhere else I’ve visited. This sense of ease makes Montenegro one of the most compelling hidden luxury destinations in Europe, and I’d highly recommend visiting if you’re looking for a premium experience. The standard of hotels and hospitality is exceptional. Many properties have been thoughtfully restored from historic buildings and in the same style as local architecture, creating an authenticity that so many travellers crave. This is why Montenegro is featuring highly in luxury holiday guides.
I’m grateful to have built so many genuine connections with locals during my visits. Many have become friends, which is testament to the warmth and passion of the people who call Montenegro home. Their pride for the country shapes the experiences available, from private boat trips to guided cultural tours, all of which are perfectly suited for solo travel in Montenegro too.
If you’re looking for a blend of spectacular scenery, heartfelt hospitality and effortless luxury in 2026, Montenegro is an absolute must.”
